Learn more about how we can help!

  • Art therapy a form of psychotherapy (faciliated by Art Therapist) that uses the process of creativity to improve mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Art therapy can be used to help address a wide range of both psychological and physical challenges.

  • An art class focuses on learning new techniques and artistic skill. Art therapy focuses on using art as a form of expressing and communicating complex emotions that may be difficult to talk about.

  • Sessions are tailored to the individual, so sessions may change in structure, how a typical session may include:

    • A check-in conversation

    • a guided or self directed art activity

    • reflection and discussion about the art work

    • connecting themes to thoughts, emotions or life experiences

  • No, you do not have to be a certain age. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilites

  • Art therapy can be used to support people experiencing:

    • Anxiety

    • Depression

    • Trauma

    • Grief/loss

    • Chronic illness

    • Behavioural challenges

    • Low self-esteem

    • Developmental delay

    • ADHD

    • Autism

    • Difficulty expressing themselves verbally.

  • Yes, it is an evidence-based practice. The BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) have links to research articles including a range of conditions. The link: https://baat.org/art-therapy/evidence/

  • No you do have to be ‘good’ at art. Art therapy focused more on the process - what might emerge emotionally, symbolically and personalluy through the art.

  • Sometimes works are not enough to describe or explore what we are going through. Trauma, grief and stress can live in the body and mind, which can become overwhelming. Creating art engages different parts of the brain than talking alone. The creative process can help stimulate new neural connections that can enhance overall cognitive function. Dr Cathy Malchiodi, has published several texts into the link between neuroscience and the expressive arts. Link Dr Malchiodi’s website: https://cathymalchiodio.com
